Macro Monday – Daisy

June 3, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

We’re in the midst of the 2013 Virginia Working Landscapes Bird Survey, and over the weekend, my partner and I did two surveys at Kinloch Farm in The Plains, Virginia. This is our third consecutive year working in the fields on this beautiful farm, and it’s been rewarding to see the many new species making their homes here now that the farm owners are transitioning them to native grasslands. On Saturday morning, I arrived early to the field and enjoyed […]

Zebra Swallowtail

iPhoneography Challenge: Macro

May 13, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I love that famous photography saying that “the best camera is the one you have with you.” This image, although certainly not one of my most technically correct macros, was a fun capture because I was actually on the back of the riding tractor when I took this. As I was mowing the lawn and, ahem, decapitating most of the dandelions growing in the yard, I noticed this beautiful Zebra Swallowtail fluttering along beside me. I stopped and watched it […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: Patterns

May 10, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I went to the State Arboretum of Virginia this morning to spend an hour on the walking trail. I’d planned to take my camera and photograph the birds while I practiced for the Virginia Working Landscapes survey season, but at the last-minute I decided to just take my binoculars so I could really concentrate on bird IDs. I saw and heard a variety of birds, and with my Audubon Bird App on my iPhone I was able to ID a few […]

Peppermint

Tagged P: Peppermint

April 30, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

Peppermint often spends much of her day sitting by the front door. She keeps an eye on the bird feeders and lets me know when the squirrels arrive. A slight scratch at the door is the announcement that she wants to go out. She’ll take a flying leap off of the front porch, and sometimes (not often, though) she’ll startle one of the squirrels before it realizes she’s charging toward the tree where the bird feeders hang.  A few times […]

Macro Monday: Lily

April 29, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

It’s been a busy Monday so far, but I did take a few minutes to walk around the yard for some macro images since we had a soft rain falling on and off. Cameron and I spent the past few weeks purchasing flowers and plants for our yard and garden, and some of them–along with our favorite old standbys–are finally planted and blooming. This young lily that’s emerging from a garden planter is one of more than a dozen that […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: Up

April 24, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I’ve found myself looking up from under flowering trees this spring while out on hikes and photo expeditions. I spent some quality time with this forsythia last week and experimented with different angles while working with my macro lens. It seems more natural for me to shoot down into flowers, but sometimes looking up offers an altogether different perspective that makes for a fun image.

iPhoneography Challenge: Earth Day

April 22, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I have fond memories of Earth Day from my childhood. I recall many special events, field trips and volunteer efforts where I got my hands dirty, cleaned up streams, planted trees and hunted for salamanders in window wells. As a student at John Muir Elementary School and then a Natural Resources major in college, I learned to appreciate Earth Day from the ground up as I studied ecosystems, geology, Rachel Carson, the extinction of species, biochemistry, botany and global deforestation […]

Cam's Save

Tagged O: On It

April 16, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This spring season Cam returned to his roots as one of the goalies for his Clarke County Crew travel soccer team. A few years ago, he was the starting goalie for his Loudoun Lads team, but when he moved out West last fall he was tapped for his scoring ability. As a veteran soccer Mom, I was relieved that he was no longer in the goal. It was always so nerve-wracking watching much larger boys barreling toward him, knowing that Cam’s […]

National Mall

Tagged N: National Mall

April 8, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I had hoped to travel down to the National Mall to visit the cherry blossoms this year, but due their late arrival and an impending deadline this week, I don’t think I’m going to make it. Therefore, as a fill-in image for the A-Z Archive Challenge Letter N, I selected a photograph from a trip to Washington, D.C. last summer. This is a photo of the National World War II Memorial, “which honors the 16 million men and women who served […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: A Day In My Life

April 1, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge asked us to document a typical day in our lives visually. So, today I decided to focus on some of the small moments of my life that constitute the routine. After getting started this morning, I realized that capturing some of these often unrecognized tasks is really more of what life is all about than special occasions that always seem to be what we find when we open scrapbooks and photo albums. For me, […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: Future Tense

March 25, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge was Future Tense. At first, I think I took the definition too literally when I read the description on Friday. All that came to mind were the buds on a tree or flower primed and ready to emerge or a newborn foal or an untouched meal ready and waiting for that first bite. As it turns out, I didn’t return to the challenge until this afternoon, and over the weekend among other chores and […]

Fun Photo Challenge: Circles and Curves

March 20, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This week’s Fun Photo Challenge is Circles and Curves, and I found just the image for this challenge in my collection from Indianapolis. The Circle Centre mall is one of our favorite stops when we stay downtown. The interior of the mall is filled with shops, of course, but also various walkways and courts that incorporate natural light and bridges built over the streets. You can stroll from the mall to seven hotels and many cultural attractions without ever stepping […]

iPhone Challenge: Black and White

March 18, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I hate to admit how long it took me to clean my office over the weekend, but let’s just say it was way, way overdue. The result, however, made me so happy this morning when I finally sat down at my desk. In addition to cleaning and decluttering, I reorganized and primed and painted an old bookshelf that now beautifully displays some of my favorite photographs, books and magazines. Among the stored items I uncovered was this large pine cone […]

Fun Photo Challenge: Squares And Angles

March 13, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

These days, I’m out of my element when I spend time in big cities. Growing up just outside Washington, D.C., I spent lots of time around tall buildings, commuter traffic, riding the Metro, driving on the Beltway and among bustling humans rushing to and fro. Now, when I have the opportunity to spend time where pavement overrides grass, it’s actually a novelty, and I enjoy walking around and photographing the buildings, people and other aspects of civilization that I once […]

Monument Circle

March 12, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

I spent time photographing the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana last weekend. It’s an impressive monument that stands 284 feet tall (just 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty) with a beautiful view of the city from the observation deck. You can climb the 331 stairs to the top, or pay $2 for a round-trip elevator ride. The monument was established in 1888 and designed by German architect Bruno Schmitz. It was finished in 1901 and […]

Phoneography Challenge: My Neighborhood

March 9, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This week’s WordPress Challenge fit in perfectly with my week. We had 20″ of snow, and I spent some time outdoors with my iPhone, capturing images around my home and neighborhood during and after the storm. I had intended to take out my DSLRs the past few days, but it seemed each time I bundled up to go outside to dig out, it was simply easier to put my phone in my pocket and combine shoveling with photos. I’ve really […]

Tori Colvin and Inclusive

March 8, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This is about as good as it gets in the sport of show hunters, which is judged subjectively on the horse’s movement, jumping ability and manners combined with the rider’s ability to present the horse to each fence with the same rhythm, pace and take-off spot. The ideal score is 100, and Tori and Inclusive received a 92 from the judges for this round, which also garnered them the week’s high-score award. Inclusive is in perfect form, leaving plenty of […]

Hay

iPhone Challenge: Nature

March 4, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

Cameron and I have a funny (to us) tradition. When we’re driving and see a vehicle carrying hay, we shout “Hey!” And because we live in the country, where horses and cattle abound, we’re regularly calling out that “H” word. I don’t remember when this silly game started, but now it’s so ingrained that we’re always on the look-out for hay as we’re traveling. We don’t usually include hay in fields, but sometimes if we’re particularly bored or on long […]

Weekly Photo Challenge: Lost In The Details

March 1, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

This week’s Photo Challenge is Lost in the Details, and it reminded me of a challenging time I had photographing The Angel Oak in Charleston, South Carolina. The Angel Oak is estimated to be 300 to 400 years old and is thought to be the largest Live Oak East of the Mississippi River. With a height of 65 feet and covering 17,000 square feet of shade, The Angel Oak’s immensity is difficult to capture in one frame without losing perspective. At […]

Ice

Tagged I: Ice

February 26, 2013 by Tricia Booker Photography

We experienced another ice storm today, although it didn’t turn out to be as problematic as the forecasters had implied. We had a slight coating of ice on the trees and shrubs, but thankfully the roads remained fine and I was able to attend my meetings and return home without problems. For this week’s A-Z Challenge I chose ice, since I’ve had ample opportunity to photograph a variety of icy subjects this winter. This is an image of a shrub […]
