I have a new respect for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association, its leaders, volunteers, coaches, riders and parents. It’s been a long time since I’ve left a competition feeling so inspired by the people I met, the talent I witnessed and the dedication that so many had for the horse and horsemanship. I enjoyed so many great interviews that I wish I could dedicate an entire magazine to them rather than one relatively short article.
Over the years, I’ve heard many people speak negatively about the IHSA and its programs. I’m grateful that I was able to experience IHSA Nationals firsthand so I could draw my own conclusions—and it was most definitely positive.
My years in the IHSA were great. What a great education riding so many unknown horses.
I agree. I think many of these students will have successful futures in the horse world. Very motivated and intelligent young people!
Great photo! I was in IHSA for a brief time at two different schools… one was a very bad experience (but so was their entire equine program, really), and one was very good. Unfortunately because I usually worked 3-4 jobs at a time to try to keep myself afloat in college, I didn’t have time to really participate with the team as I would’ve liked, but my teammates and coach and everyone at the second school were excellent. And as a tremendously poor person, it gave me an opportunity for formal riding instruction that I couldn’t have gotten otherwise.
