This Eastern Box turtle was a good sport. The kids netted it in the pond and brought it back to show us. They were careful to treat it gently, and carried it from house to house on their “turtle” tour. We arrived in South Carolina this afternoon to a gorgeous fall day. Cameron immediately took off outside with his Cousins Daisy and Charley and friend Lila to play in the pond, ride bikes and explore the neighborhood. When they returned home to retrieve a bucket for their fishing expedition, they were intercepted. We’re fast approaching winter, and most of the leaves have fallen or been blown off the trees now. Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde traveled from his home base of Elmpt, Germany, to work as the lead clinician during the United States Hunter Jumper Association Emerging Athletes Program Finals in Illinois. He instructed the riders over two days while they got to know their borrowed mounts and then will judge them tomorrow during the final day’s competition. The top 12 finalists in the United States Hunter Jumper Association Emerging Athletes Program traveled from throughout the nation to Country Ridge Stables in Mundelein, Illinois, to spend four days being evaluated on their riding skills, horsemanship abilities and horse care knowledge. Tonight’s grand opening reception at the Dover Saddlery store in Libertyville, Illinois, was everything a horse person loves—new tack, the latest in equipment, stylish attire, tasty food and good conversation. I’ve spent several years harvesting milkweed seeds for my butterfly garden, but I’ve come to realize that the rocky, thin soil on the mountain just doesn’t seem conducive for their growth. Having Monarchs around my yard would be great, but so far I’ve only attracted the swallowtails by planting parsley in the garden. The Hill School tree stands tall on the highest point on campus.
