I revisited my archives for this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge: Sun. I posted a similar image last year of the Jefferson Memorial (in HDR), but I hadn’t realized at the time I had a frame that included a plane taking off from nearby Reagan National Airport. I edited this one in Adobe Lightroom 4 and found that it gave me some additional options from version 3. Although this has a slight hint of HDR, it’s just one image but with a heavier hand on the highlights and shadows sliders that are available in 4.
Looking back, I spent more than a decade in the darkroom playing with papers, chemicals, dodging and burning, and I have to admit that sitting at a computer (with dry hands and no fumes) in a nice bright room with a view is a much more enjoyable way to edit images!
Love the drama in this photo!! Well done!!
Many thanks, David!
Wow! majestic and beautiful…
Thank you! Yes, I agree. The monuments in Washington are so amazing.

I could have written that with just one minor change: “Look back, I spent more than four decades….”
Hi Russel! Without dating myself, I did start my darkroom career in high school but took a break during college. Then, for about a decade my job included darkroom work when I developed and printed all of the in-house photos for a weekly news magazine. I have fond memories of those early days, which really started my photography career. But I had no idea—back then it was just something fun to do with my friends!
This is stunning!
Thank you, Laura! I appreciate your kind words!
