The $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular is held annually in Wellington, Florida, each February. I’ve photographed this event since its inaugural year way back in 1997!
So much has changed since then, with the sport and the photography. But even after 19 years, I still enjoy observing some of the country’s best show hunters compete under the lights with appreciative spectators filling the stands. The challenge is to deal with the shifting lights while stopping the action and finding interesting compositions while hoping that the horse jumps in beautiful form.
Even if you think you have everything in place, sometimes a horse will drop a leg, have his ears pinned or the rider will jump off-center and the photo will be relegated to the delete folder.
When it all works out, though, it’s rewarding to capture that memorable moment, when the show hunter tucks his knees to his chin, with ears pricked and is visibly enjoying his job.
Here are some of my favorites from the evening, edited in Lightroom and Macphun Intensify Pro.
Awesome action shots!
Thank you so much!
Nice series. Especially like the range of colors.
Thanks, David. Lots of eye candy down there, for sure!
