Now that I’m in the Level 20 Lounge in The Arcanum, I’m among those photographers waiting for Sphere 2 to open and to be selected by a new master. In the meantime, the members of the Lounge have participated in challenges, photography-related discussions and attending the Creation Wars events each Monday night. While enjoying this relative quiet time, I’ve had the opportunity to go back into my photo files from 2014 to explore. Today’s challenge was the word “time,” […]

Skyland Farm is thrilled to announce the arrival of C’superman, also known as Clarke Kent! The bay colt was born at 12:01 a.m. on April 19 and welcomed into the world by Denice and Roy Perry, as well as a variety of Skyland Farm clients and friends who watched at the barn and around the world via the “foal cam.” Clarke is by Copperman and out of Cirena and was carried to term by the…

Each year, WordPress provides a year-end review of their hosted websites, and I always enjoy receiving these summaries. Although this information is at hand if you study the stats in detail, it’s kind of interesting to see it collected the way they do. This year, for instance, I had visitors from 82 countries and slightly more than 16,000 views. I posted 152 times in 2013 with a grand total of 589 posts since I began this blog in 2011. I […]

For the first time today, I visited the Clarke County Courthouse as a juror of my peers. Even though being called for jury duty came at an inopportune time as I have a major deadline this week, it was something I was looking forward to experiencing. As it turned out, this criminal case was settled while the assembled potential jurors sat in a comfortable waiting room just outside the courtroom drinking coffee, reading and chatting about the local high school […]

I found this bicycle leaning up against a sign post in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. I really liked the rough texture of the brick wall and the contrast between the shine of the well-kept bike. A lost image from the depths of the iPhone photo gallery edited in Camera +.

It’s difficult to imagine eating a horse, but I know in many cultures horse meat is considered a delicacy. I fell in love with horses as a small child, and since then I’ve thought of them in many ways, from teachers, friends, athletes, partners and simply as beautiful when I observe them in their natural state, free and grazing in their fields. Therefore, the recent articles exposing the European horse meat scandal have made me cringe. I feel for all […]

Today we are having replacement windows installed in our house, and the sounds of breaking glass and banging and tearing are quite mind-numbing as the installers move from room to room. So, I thought I’d spend some time working on a photograph that soothes and reminds me of how gorgeous windows and sparkling glass can look when combined with chrome and a lovingly restored antique automobile. This image was processed in Color Efex Pro 4 using the Detail Extractor and […]

I enjoyed reading the WordPress year-end analysis today, which collected information from my blog in 2012. Although I didn’t post as often as I did in 2011, when I took the post-a-day challenge, I still enjoyed a variety of new readers and followers, so thank you very much! Here’s an excerpt: 4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 13,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 3 Film […]

This week’s questions for Cee’s Life Photography Blog resulted in some interesting and thought-provoking rumination. At what time in your recent past have you felt most passionate and alive? — Last Saturday I showed my horse for the first time after buying him as a yearling. It’s been a very rewarding yet long road from age 1 to 5, and in between there have been many ups and downs. But actually walking into the show ring sitting on his back and […]

“Creativity is within us all.” This is a simple phrase, but it’s so true. We are all born with an open mind, and over the years it’s gradually filled with information, ideas and philosophies. We might push creativity into a corner while we explore other aspects of life, forge our personalities, ideals, morals and pursue an education. If we’re lucky, our creativity (and imagination) remains relatively intact, and when resurrected we’re able to draw on it again and tap it […]

Shadows have been on my mind lately. I think one of the reasons is because my friends at Blue Ridge Workshops have posted a few Facebook challenges, including one featuring shadows and silhouettes. So as I walked down to the outdoor ring today I noticed the long shadows and stopped to take a few shots with my iPhone. It was fun to play with different filters, and I shot a few images with Camera+ and Instagram. I chose this one […]

A week makes a big difference, especially this particular week. Last Friday I spent the day at the doctor dealing with severe neck pain, and after a week of rest and some changes in my sleeping habits I’m feeling back to normal. Even though Cam had no school and a full day of skiing, I only spent a few hours on the slopes. It was a nice afternoon to return to action, and on my last run of the day […]

Today’s photo shoot at the Middleburg Millwork, a unique combination of working mill and hardware store, offered many fun and artsy results. Our job today was to explore the Millwork, shoot some of the new products and spring merchandise, and soak in the atmosphere for future marketing and advertising ideas. I drive by the Millwork every day when dropping Cam off at school as it’s located next door, but I hadn’t ventured inside for more than a decade. So it […]

CAUTION: READ AT OWN RISK. Sorry about the yelling, but I have to warn you. This isn’t a pretty post, especially if you’re like me and a daily flosser. I actually take pride in truthfully answering that infamous question you’re asked when you go to the dentist. “Do you floss every day?” Yes, I do! Then, I sit back and relax in the dentist’s chair while the hygienist flosses my teeth, knowing that she’ll soon see I’m telling the truth […]

Once again, my hopes were high when I turned on the Rose Bowl tonight. The University of Wisconsin, my alma mater, was playing in this featured championship game for the second consecutive year. Since I attended college, each time the Badgers have won the Rose Bowl I’ve purchased a sweatshirt to celebrate their victory, and my current model, circa 2000, is more than ready for replacement. Don’t get me wrong, though. I certainly wouldn’t discard this cherished piece of clothing […]

Today’s adventure took me to the 2nd Annual Virginia Chamber of Commerce Economic Summit at the Ritz-Carleton in Tysons Corner. With a variety of speakers, from former Virginia Governors George Allen and Tim Kaine to other top economic players, it was an informative and inspiring day to think about business and industry in the Commonwealth. Although my fledgling small business is far from being affected by some of the challenges these speakers addressed, hearing their thoughts on future business growth […]

The village of Upperville is our home away from home. From our time at Blue Ridge Tae Kwon Do to the Post Office to pick up packages to the Country Store for a gallon of milk, it’s where we connect with close friends and neighbors. Our one gas station, the Upperville Citgo, is also a frequent stop on our route from Paris to Middleburg, where we fill the Tahoe, the gas cans to run the lawn mower and our tires […]

Even before I flew home from Chicago, I’d received a survey in my inbox from United asking me about my incoming flight from Washington. One of the questions went something like this: Do you still get excited when you fly? I immediately went to hit the no button but then paused. I wouldn’t describe feeling “excited,” but almost no matter where I go I do feel energized. I get on the airplane looking forward to an adventure, meeting new people […]

Monday evenings mean soccer practice for Cameron and a nice walk for me. Peppermint and I usually take to the fields around Kenneth Culbert Elementary School in Purcellville, catching some pretty scenery as we stretch our legs. Tonight we ranged farther afield and stumbled upon the track, which is placed above the school on a high hill. With billowy clouds on the horizon and colorful trees in the background, it provided a great place for us to spend time burning some […]
