It was 3 degrees when I awoke early this morning to let the dog out, and there were already clusters of birds around the feeders. With 9″ of new snow on the ground, the birds are finding it a challenge to forage for food. I spent time photographing the Indiana Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana last weekend. It’s an impressive monument that stands 284 feet tall (just 15 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty) with a beautiful view of the city from the observation deck. This is about as good as it gets in the sport of show hunters, which is judged subjectively on the horse’s movement, jumping ability and manners combined with the rider’s ability to present the horse to each fence with the same rhythm, pace and take-off spot. As part of their science curriculum,The Hill School sixth-graders spent one April afternoon planting trees on a local farm. A-Z Archive: Q

Not many horses have the talent for a great sliding stop, but it’s one of the traits that sets the Quarter Horse apart from other breeds. For the A-Z Archive Challenge letter “Q” it seemed appropriate to highlight one of those special moments that cowboys and cow horses share, when the ideal sliding stop comes together with a confident, balanced effort and lots of flying dirt. So much fun!
