The Squirrel Buster bird feeder is indeed doing its job. After our bear incident last weekend, I found all of the pieces strewn about the yard and managed to reassemble it, and, remarkably, it’s working again. I figured out that if I walk up to the window with my camera already up in place, hiding my face, the Goldfinches will tend to ignore me. I can approach to within three feet or so of their feeder and even change locations without startling them. A Happy Anniversary

The Maremma Sheepdog puppies didn’t seem at all fazed by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck just before our photo shoot this afternoon in Virginia. Both 8-week-old puppies—Jackson and Emma—were just emerging from an afternoon nap when I arrived. Peppermint had an eye-opening experience earlier this summer. One of the best reasons to visit Grandma and Grandpa—other than, of course, hanging out with them—is having a pool out your back door. And with the temperatures soaring to triple digits this week, Cam’s taken advantage of the opportunity to keep cool. With buddies Jacob and Lila by his side in and out of the water, he’s in kid heaven this week. And who could deny that smile says anything else.
