I spent a rewarding four days attending the 2012 United States Hunter Jumper Association Emerging Athletes Program National Training Session last week in Chicago. During today’s Nations Cup competition for the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Finals, I was fortunate to be able to work from the middle of the indoor arena. Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde traveled from his home base of Elmpt, Germany, to work as the lead clinician during the United States Hunter Jumper Association Emerging Athletes Program Finals in Illinois. He instructed the riders over two days while they got to know their borrowed mounts and then will judge them tomorrow during the final day’s competition. The top 12 finalists in the United States Hunter Jumper Association Emerging Athletes Program traveled from throughout the nation to Country Ridge Stables in Mundelein, Illinois, to spend four days being evaluated on their riding skills, horsemanship abilities and horse care knowledge. Tonight’s grand opening reception at the Dover Saddlery store in Libertyville, Illinois, was everything a horse person loves—new tack, the latest in equipment, stylish attire, tasty food and good conversation.
