I wondered why only three parents volunteered for today’s sixth-grade field trip, to hike Old Rag Mountain near Sperryville, Virginia—myself, Ted Eldredge and Laura Scharfenberg. We awoke this morning to beautiful blue skies, glistening snow but an ugly yard. The poor trees suffered so; we definitely lost three trees and maybe several more. We will see if the injured rebound from the lost limbs and cracked trunks. I’ve stalked the hummingbirds this week, hoping to capture some improved images. I spent about 15 minutes each afternoon sitting on the deck steps. Once they got comfortable and began to ignore me, I crept closer to the feeder and eventually sat in the grass about 15 feet away. The Maremma Sheepdog puppies didn’t seem at all fazed by the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck just before our photo shoot this afternoon in Virginia. Both 8-week-old puppies—Jackson and Emma—were just emerging from an afternoon nap when I arrived. We spent some time in the house before moving out into the yard, where they quickly woke up and explored their surroundings. When I first arrived here in Michigan a few days ago, I noticed an abundance of dragonflies as we unpacked the car in the early evening. Yesterday’s many activities included a thorough watering of the garden since rain has been elusive this week. The chore gave me an excuse to survey the yard, which I hadn’t done in several days. This summer I’ve observed the Great Spangled Fritillary butterflies that have made our garden a regular stop on their rounds. Last month, they appeared fresh and beautiful, with rich colors and perfectly formed wings. Today, the two hanging out on the Marigolds were most definitely past their prime, with tattered and faded wings. The bone yard beach on Capers Island is a misnomer. You don’t find bleached whale bones here. Instead, it’s a graveyard for deceased trees, those that have lost their battle to stand up to the relentless pounding surf.
