I enjoyed a weekend in Baltimore, Maryland, at the Inner Harbor, exploring the sights with my family and my camera. Our hotel room at the Royal Sonesta Harbor Court provided me with a wonderful view of the city and the harbor, so I spent several sessions seated in front of the bow windows playing with camera settings and experimenting. From this perspective I was able to capture the brilliant lights reflecting off the water before we went out on Saturday […]

I’m not into selfies, but once in a while I’ll stumble upon a cool reflection and take a moment to experiment. This beautiful piece of artwork caught my eye last summer while at a garden and art boutique in Michigan. I’m rarely without a camera, and I’ve found that the little Sony RX100 is a great companion even while out and about with friends. It only takes a moment to pull it out of my pocket and snap away. While […]

Last weekend we managed to get out during a break in the weather to hike in West Virginia. We traveled to the Berkeley Springs area and enjoyed a few hours at Cacapon State Park on the trails as well as a stroll through the artsy downtown. Berkeley Springs is home to the country’s first spa, and the mineral springs are still a popular place. In fact, as I shot the image above, a man was in the adjacent pool taking […]

Even though the spring flowers are providing lots of colorful inspiration, I’ve thought in black-and-white lately for a variety of reasons. So, as Peppermint and I explored the State Arboretum of Virginia this week, I paused to work on this image. As I walked by this area I noticed a plein air painter set up underneath a tree and focused on this general vicinity. It did look lovely, with hints of green against a bright blue sky, reflections of subtle […]

I revisited some of my bird photographs recently and re-edited this one in Lightroom 4, which worked well for the Tagged E challenge this week. After recently receiving an Audubon award for a different image of this same bird, I realized that the Great Egret is, in fact, the symbol of the National Audubon Society. Now that I’ve photographed these impressive birds multiple times, including during their breeding season last spring, I can understand why this species was selected. The […]

You can take this Weekly Photo Challenge of Beyond in many different directions: from a beautiful photograph of a cityscape where you can see for miles into the great beyond to a playful shot using shallow depth of field with an image in focus and then another one blurred beyond. But this photograph that I edited in Color Efex Pro 4 yesterday came to mind for this challenge. When I took this photo, I could see Cam’s eyes reflected in […]

After nearly a year since my first visit, I finally returned to the Blandy Photo Club for their January meeting. The club meets monthly at the State Arboretum of Virginia and generally includes members who focus on nature and horticultural photography. Last night’s theme was indoor macro, and one member prepared a variety of different stations where we could experiment with such items as incense, flowers, kitchen utensils and backgrounds. It was great to stretch my brain cells and try […]

Today I traveled to Florida for World Championship Hunter Rider week during the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival circuit. It was a long travel day, which began at 4 a.m. from my home in Virginia and finally concluded at 4 p.m. in Wellington. Thankfully, I was rewarded for my perseverance with beautiful weather and a lovely evening seeing old friends and meeting a few new ones. I always enjoy this annual winter break, watching many of the best show hunters […]

Today was one of those days when I have a hard time staying warm. Even though the high temperature broke out of the 30s, the cold wind and dampness kept me shivering most of the day. Peppermint and I took a brief walk this afternoon, taking in the winter scenery and trying to get a little exercise on an otherwise quiet afternoon in the office. A highlight, though, was watching an adolescent bald eagle hunting for game near the mountain. […]

One bonus to having subscribed to a variety of photography blogs this year was the number of tutorials I received on photographing holiday lights, whether outside at night or on the Christmas tree. After several weeks with my cameras in their respective bags, I was finally inspired to get out the big DSLR again after reading a few of these fascinating articles. I spent an entertaining afternoon taking nearly 50 shots of my small tree, playing with lenses, settings and […]

The United States Hunter Jumper Association Annual Meeting is sprinkled with awards ceremonies. I’ve always enjoyed photographing these events as I know how difficult it is to earn one of these coveted awards from the sport’s affiliate organization. I enjoy watching the smiles and tears of joy as recipients step up to the stage for their ribbon or silver trophy. Working with horses is different from many other endeavors because your partner is another being with thoughts, feelings and desires. […]

We awoke to the aftermath of a cold rain overnight. It was still foggy and damp this morning, but with a hint of sunlight breaking through the clouds there was still promise that the day would become nice. After a short walk around the yard with the camera and the dog, Cam and I ventured off on the errands we had on our lengthy list that took us from Winchester to Front Royal to Culpeper. The sun came out during […]

When the hot summer nights end and the crisp fall evenings take their place, we open our windows once again. And a highlight of these transition weeks between hot and cold is the nightly sounds of the katydids in the forest surrounding our home. Known as one of the loudest insects in North America, katydids sing throughout the night. With males and females both calling, their cacophony of sounds send us to sleep feeling as if we’re surrounded by nature. […]

We love Fridays, and it’s not just because it’s the day before the weekend. Cam and I have a busy schedule this fall, with each day after school—Monday through Thursday—filled with activities. From school projects, to soccer, to Tae Kwon Do, to homework, we seem to have just about every minute filled. So, when Friday rolls around we’re both ready for a break, and, thankfully, it’s worked out that Friday is our free day. Today after getting home from school, […]

This evening I joined my sister-in-law as a guest on her weekly golf league. Golf is one of those activities that reminds me of the current stock market—the results are often swinging wildly one way or the other. It all eventually comes together, but I would describe my game now as in a recession. After a few well-meaning golf lessons the past few weeks, I seem to be in swing meltdown. Fearful of the status of my swing, I focus […]

Cameron has always enjoyed accompanying me out to the barn, but now he has a new reason: photography. I “loaned” him one of my old digital camera bodies and a 24-120 mm lens, and he spends his time wandering around the farm shooting photos while I ride. Today, he concentrated on close-ups of the horses, including the stallion Copperman, who patiently allowed Cameron to get up close and personal. After downloading his photos, we decided this one was one of […]

The dog days of summer are officially here. And Peppermint will be the first to tell you that temperatures in the triple digits are no fun, especially for a fluffy Jack Russell. While Peppermint has always preferred to be an indoor dog, these past few days she doesn’t even want to venture out for a walk around the yard. She’ll barely leave the shade of the garage, and even then it’s only if she believes she might be heading from […]

I’ve driven by Oxbow Farm in Clarke County, Virginia, for many years, always admiring the immaculate farm fields and the spectacular vistas. Today, I was invited there for bird identification practice and a picnic via my volunteer work with Virginia Working Landscapes and the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. The 1,400-acre farm was even more impressive on the inside, and we were able to catalog a variety of birds, including bobolinks, orioles, warblers, kingbirds, meadowlarks, red-wing blackbirds and towhees, to name […]
