Today in Virginia the mercury hit 80 degrees, and I’m feeling hopeful that the winter is finally in the rearview mirror. It’s been a challenging few months for me as I continue to recover from past illnesses, but with the warmer weather, spring flowers peeking out and horses shedding their thick winter coats, I feel like a fresh and vibrant start is just around the corner. Sadly, regular posts to my blog this winter were set aside while I focused […]
This week’s Photography Challenge featured the word “Reward,” and I instantly knew where to look for a photo depicting this definition. One of my favorite places to stand and photograph during a horse show is at the out-gate after the riders have received their ribbons. There’s often a moment after the awards ceremony when the rider revels in the moment and rewards the horse with a kiss or a pat on the neck as they leave the ring. Some riders […]
The $100,000 WCHR Peter Wetherill Palm Beach Hunter Spectacular is held annually in Wellington, Florida, each February. I’ve photographed this event since its inaugural year way back in 1997! So much has changed since then, with the sport and the photography. But even after 19 years, I still enjoy observing some of the country’s best show hunters compete under the lights with appreciative spectators filling the stands. The challenge is to deal with the shifting lights while stopping the action […]
Today I spent the day photographing some of the most beautiful show hunters in the country that are competing on the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Florida. Each year I travel here for World Championship Hunter Rider week, where the hunters are featured. Unlike show jumpers that compete against the clock, these show horses are judged subjectively on their jumping style and movement. They’re like eye candy for horse lovers! Here are a few of my favorites.

This is about as good as it gets in the sport of show hunters, which is judged subjectively on the horse’s movement, jumping ability and manners combined with the rider’s ability to present the horse to each fence with the same rhythm, pace and take-off spot. The ideal score is 100, and Tori and Inclusive received a 92 from the judges for this round, which also garnered them the week’s high-score award. Inclusive is in perfect form, leaving plenty of […]
I spent most of my day editing images for a variety of projects and clients. It was nice to finally have some time to go through the 1,000+ photos I shot last week, which may sound like an impressive number but was actually about half of my usual for this particular event. One of the photos that caught my eye was this line up of junior hunters awaiting the announcement of placings and ribbons. The horses’ and riders’ expressions are […]

It’s finally time for a deep breath. After a whirlwind week of traveling, photography, interviewing and writing, my magazine, In Stride, is off to the printer tonight. I work with a wonderful editor and designer, and after two-plus years together, I feel like we’re a well-oiled machine. It was also quite fortunate that all of the machines that brought me back from Florida yesterday, an old, black Crown Victoria rental car (don’t ask!), two Delta airplanes and a Tahoe, all functioned […]
Even though we put in long hours working this week during the USHJA’s World Championship Hunter Rider Palm Beach Spectacular, I totally enjoy my time in Florida. Yesterday morning I was up early to catch the first riders as they entered the show ring. The light streaming into the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center’s Internationale Arena was stunning, and hanging out with my long-time photographer friends is an added bonus that I look forward to each year. Unfortunately, I didn’t […]
While I was working today at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival, I took a break to walk around with my camera. I noticed this adorable horse standing in the schooling area waiting for his turn and couldn’t help taking a few photos. Unlike many of the veteran show horses who go to sleep or look totally bored ringside, he was very interested in his surroundings and watched everything intently. He appeared to have a lot of character and was […]
Today I traveled to Florida for World Championship Hunter Rider week during the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival circuit. It was a long travel day, which began at 4 a.m. from my home in Virginia and finally concluded at 4 p.m. in Wellington. Thankfully, I was rewarded for my perseverance with beautiful weather and a lovely evening seeing old friends and meeting a few new ones. I always enjoy this annual winter break, watching many of the best show hunters […]
