Loyalty. It’s one of the traits dogs have that stands them apart from other pets. Even though I’ve loved many animals that have shared my life—cats, birds and horses—dogs are unique. When I return home after being away from my dog, it’s always a reunion. No matter how long we’ve been apart, whether a quick trip to the grocery or a week-long business trip, we share the joy of seeing one another again. And it’s wonderful.

Growing up, I never had a dog for a variety of reasons. Today, the best part about returning home is often simply opening the front door.
