This impressive Red-Tailed Hawk has been hanging out a lot in our backyard. Last night the light was quite beautiful as he relaxed on his favorite perch at about 5 p.m. Unfortunately, the 80-400 mm lens is my longest focal length, and even with some cropping on the D3s, this was the best I could do when shooting from the deck. Nevertheless, you can see the view he has of the Shenandoah River Valley below as he oversees his domain. […]
Well, this evening’s sunset over the Shenandoah Valley certainly looked beautiful and it made up, in part, for a tough day digging out after our 20-inch snowfall of yesterday. We managed to get the Tahoe dug out and to the top of the driveway so my husband could get to work this morning, but that was all the good luck we had. Even with our wonderful neighbor moving snow from our driveway with her Kubota tractor, I managed to get […]
Sunset comes early to the mountain this time of year. I’m fortunate I’m not one of those people who becomes depressed during the short winter days because living up here, in the shadow of the Blueridge, certainly doesn’t afford extra daylight. Tonight, as I watched the shadow grow across the valley, I was grateful that this would be the shortest day of the year and from now on, we’d see more sunlight each day. Although I enjoy skiing, I’m not […]
Isn’t it ironic to find a praying mantis on the golf course? For me, the answer is a resounding yes. I find myself praying to the golf gods on a regular basis, as it seems that no matter what you do or how you do it, there’s some sort of otherworldly power that creates the outcome once you’ve hit the ball. Golf is unlike the other sports I play. When you think you’ve mastered a skill (no matter how small), […]
The culmination of our day was an impromptu nine holes of golf at the Shenandoah Valley Golf Club. After a full day of activities, including golf lessons, shopping and the last Harry Potter film (which was awesome), we decided it was a lovely evening for a relaxing practice session before we returned home. It was still hot and humid, but a slight breeze and the abundant trees on this well-established course helped keep us cool. Cam took the opportunity to […]
The only thing nice about the 11th hole at the Packsaddle Ridge Golf Course near Harrisonburg, Virginia, is the view. The uphill par 5 seems to last forever, especially if, like me, the most difficult aspect of your game is working the fairway. But the reward after chipping up onto the green may be worth it, as the views of the Shenandoah Valley are just breathtaking. And, at least I had one breathtaking moment during my game today.
We spent Easter Sunday enjoying the beauty of a gorgeous spring day in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. After taking the scenic route to Saddlepack Ridge Golf Course near Harrisonburg, we discovered a new paradise for golf. The views from this golf club are breathtaking, and the Forbes family, who designed and built the course in 2003, made the most of the vistas and scenery in their construction. In addition to the natural beauty, the design incorporates a variety of […]
Cameron didn’t even have to think about what he wanted to do for his birthday: Play golf with his family. How fast he’s growing up. It wasn’t long ago that all he could talk about was a big birthday party with his friends, laser tag, Nerf gun battles and Legos. Now he’s focused on his golf game and trying to outplay his mother (which he’s already done) and his father (which won’t be long!). For his 11th birthday, he had […]
