I’m fortunate to live near The Blueridge Wildlife Center, a facility that rescues and rehabilitates injured wildlife. Over the past several years, I’ve taken injured birds and animals to them, watched releases and observed their educational programs with my son. Last weekend I was thrilled to join them on a release, when they returned a loon, duck and goose back to the wild after they’d recovered from injuries. It was a touching scene as the three birds tasted freedom once again, […]

After our 9″ of snow on Thursday, today’s balmy temperatures in the high 30s with a bright, blue sky and warm March sun made me think spring. I had a wonderful day volunteering some time and my photography to the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center in Millwood, Virginia, and caught up with my birding partner Hillary. We spent most of the afternoon on a variety of projects, including releasing, feeding and rescuing a variety of birds. While we were out feeding […]

We withstood another weekend ice storm, only losing power on Sunday. It came back on overnight, just in time for us to prepare for school and work today. Now, the forecast is for more of the same tomorrow through Thursday, with ice and accumulating snow. I’m glad that my awesome UPS driver delivered another 40 pounds of bird seed today, just in time to refill all of the feeders. We even enjoyed observing a Northern Flicker at the feeder over […]

Today I revisited some of my bird photos from last winter to check the lenses and settings I’d used, and I came upon this Dark Eyed Junco that I hadn’t edited. I spent some time playing with it, taking out some background clutter with Macphun Snapheal Pro and using Intensify Pro to produce a bit more contrast in the shadowed face. The lighting wasn’t ideal for this shot, but since birds are generally hard to pose, sometimes you have to […]

Today I spent the day photographing some of the most beautiful show hunters in the country that are competing on the Winter Equestrian Festival circuit in Florida. Each year I travel here for World Championship Hunter Rider week, where the hunters are featured. Unlike show jumpers that compete against the clock, these show horses are judged subjectively on their jumping style and movement. They’re like eye candy for horse lovers! Here are a few of my favorites.

The little Chickadee sometimes escapes my attention when the flamboyant Cardinals and adorable Carolina Wrens are dominating the bird feeders. But then I’ll go out into the yard to refill the bird feeders, and the Chickadees will be the only birds hovering nearby, just waiting for me to take a step away so they can fly over and enjoy the fresh seed. They may be diminutive and not all that flashy, but in my yard they’re the bravest of […]

The monuments in Washington, D.C. are among the most recognized buildings in the city, and I’ve enjoyed visiting them often. Photographing the monuments and memorials is sometimes a bit overwhelming, though, because of their grand scale and the many different viewpoints you can take. I could spend an entire day shooting some of them and still find myself with more to capture. Last month, when I went to D.C. on a photo walk with Arcanum Master Angela B. Pan, we […]

The Black And White Project on Google+ featured a challenge this week titled “Tools of the Trade.” While I was working on the next issue of USHJA In Stride magazine on Friday, editing and writing articles, managing freelancers and attending conference calls, I took a short break to set up this shot. As an equestrian journalist, I could have included so many more tools: my computer, iPhone, copies of the magazines, programs, prize lists and other materials my work […]

Today was one of those days when I was glad that my years of procrastination are behind me. In the old days, before I became more serious about photography, I rarely backed up my photos. I relied on my “trusty” computer hard drives to store images until the day came when I was forced to make more space and move photos to an external hard drive. Now, I have a back up system and copies of all of my images […]

The question asked in today’s Weekly Photo Challenge was to “Express Yourself.” It’s really an open concept as people express themselves in so many different ways. When thinking about my world, there are a variety of topics that came into mind. I scrolled through the various submissions on the WordPress Daily Post page to see how bloggers were visualizing the theme, and I saw beautiful flowers, children smiling, a muddy water buffalo and even a Belgian statue giving a naughty gesture. […]

The Arcanum’s Artist’s Atrium, a community on Google+, added the theme Intersections for this week’s photography challenge. As I was wandering around in my recent files looking for a photo that spoke to me of Intersections, I came across this image. I’d taken it while on my way home from a nearby scenic overlook where I’d hoped to photograph a night rocket launch over Virginia. The launch was delayed, so as I drove the 1 mile home without photos and […]

I experimented with some items around my desk this weekend for the Google+ Black and White Photography Challenge. With the theme of Macro, I happily dusted off my 100mm lens and got to work indoors on a cold winter day. With the need for bifocals on the horizon, I’ve lately employed a trusty magnifying glass, which sits prominently on my desk. I’ve noticed a variety of cool reflections as I’ve used it to read small print, so I thought it […]

The Arcanum’s Artist’s Atrium, a community on Google+, features a photography challenge each week, and this time the theme was Windows. I returned to my files from a trip to Las Vegas in 2013 where I photographed a ghost town in Eldorado Canyon, Nevada. The old mining town of Nelson was notorious for being rough and lawless, with a variety of famous murders, probably in part because it was the site of one of the biggest mining booms […]

One of the best aspects of being a member of The Arcanum is connecting with photographers from all over the world who share the same passion. How fortunate I am to be living less than an hour away from Arcanum Master Angela B. Pan. After watching Angela’s performances on The Creation Wars (where she’s undefeated after two appearances!), I sent her an email introducing myself. We decided to meet for a shoot in Washington, D.C., and yesterday was the day. […]
