This week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is the word “indulge.” My first instinct was to photograph some of my personal indulgences, which include Godiva chocolate, a heated fleece throw and my horse. But, as I was thinking more deeply about the meaning of indulge, I realized that an indulgence isn’t necessarily a tangible item. An indulgence can be just a moment in time, where, for instance, you pause between daily tasks to soak in a ray of sunlight on an […]

The builder who constructed our house must have needed a lot of dynamite to blast through all of the boulders. We are fortunate to have a half-dozen leftovers that grace the edges of our yard, creating great habitat for wildlife, fun places for Cameron to play and even nice photo ops for me. This large rock, about eight feet wide, sits just off the driveway and is a haven for creatures that have tunneled underneath to build dens. Although it’s […]

Around here, even the threat of snow creates stampedes at the grocery stores, shuts down schools before the first flake falls, and generally wreaks havoc on the brains of otherwise normal people. Today’s ominous weather report, which called for snow showers through the day with little to no accumulation except for the higher elevations of the Blue Ridge (that’s us), was met with disbelief. So, even though the sun was still breaking through the overcast this morning, my well-orchestrated day […]

An unseasonably warm January has continued on into February, but we did have a light snow fall overnight that left the mountain with a delicate white coating this morning. A foggy white haze remained covering the Blue Ridge, and periods of light snow fell periodically as the sun worked its way through cracks in the cloud bank. Before I went to the barn, I took a few photos, catching buds on this Bradford pear cloaked in white crystals. This poor tree […]

A week makes a big difference, especially this particular week. Last Friday I spent the day at the doctor dealing with severe neck pain, and after a week of rest and some changes in my sleeping habits I’m feeling back to normal. Even though Cam had no school and a full day of skiing, I only spent a few hours on the slopes. It was a nice afternoon to return to action, and on my last run of the day […]

The winter weather advisory today was a blessing in disguise. I wasn’t tempted to keep my plans intact and risk further irritating my healing neck. The roads were too icy for me to go to the barn to see my horse, and then my evening cooking class was postponed until next week due to poor weather and slippery conditions. Cameron spent the night at Bryce Resort with his classmate Alex and his family, leaving me an almost eerily quiet house […]

This is where I should have been today…but instead I went to the doctor to find out what’s wrong with my neck. Just as I’d thought yesterday, my doctor and his medical assistant found the story of my neck injury via flossing to be pretty entertaining. I can’t help but laugh now, too, although it’s partly because I have some prescription painkillers to help me smile. But, seriously, I’ve heard about people who’ve experienced pinched nerves and other muscle spasms, […]

Last week, I took some time to attend the CreativeLIVE two-day seminar on iPhoneography with Jack Hollingsworth. Wow, what a great workshop! I was totally blown away by all the fantastic ways you can take and edit photographs with the iPhone. I’ve played with Camera+ and Instagram for the past six months or so, but I really hadn’t taken the time to scratch the surface of these amazing apps. I love my iPhone camera and have really focused on using […]

I wasn’t optimistic when I drove into the parking lot at Bryce Resort and checked the temperature on my dashboard: 59 degrees. Then I glanced up to the snow-covered slopes and saw a fair number of skiers flying down the Virginia mountain. It was The Hill School’s first Friday ski day of the season, and Cam wasn’t at all worried about the conditions. In fact, he was thrilled to get out on the slopes. I parked, got him dressed and […]

Returning home from New Orléans to snow and cold wasn’t all that much fun, but watching Payton and Cameron playing in it was hysterical. We still had two inches of wet snow blanketing the ground, so it was perfect for packing and making snowballs. The two, only dressed in shorts and short-sleeved shirts, didn’t seem to mind the cold as they ran around pelting one another and playing snowball baseball until they were soaked. Although I’m not a fan of […]

We awoke this morning to beautiful blue skies, glistening snow but an ugly yard. The poor trees suffered so; we definitely lost three trees and maybe several more. We will see if the injured rebound from the lost limbs and cracked trunks. Gary got out the chainsaw and cleared the downed tree from the driveway so I could venture out to the grocery store and The Home Depot. Thankfully, the Mt. Weather fire truck had packed down the snow so […]

October 29, 2011
Well, our snowstorm did materialize. When we awoke this morning there was about 2 inches of snow on the ground. It was a wet, heavy snow and as the day continued so did the snow, up to an inch an hour at some points. We heard the trees and limbs start to fall mid-morning, sounding like cracks of gun fire as they fell to the ground, their leaves draped with snow. We went out earlier and tried to shake the […]

April 1, 2011
OK, we all know when April 1 rolls around. People enjoy pulling pranks on friends, media outlets publish outlandish articles and there’s just a hint of fun in the air. But when when the snowplow woke me up at 4 a.m., I just knew it couldn’t be an April Fool’s joke. Even VDOT wouldn’t stoop that low, spending taxpayer dollars to plow “pretend” snow. So when I glanced out the window this morning, I got what I expected: A white […]

The weather forecasters called for rain last night—and lots of it. With a flood warning posted for our area, it came as a bit of a surprise to hear pellets of sleet hitting the windows while I made dinner. But as we watched the movie Secretariat after dinner, the sleet turned to heavy snow, leaving us with about 3″ on top of the ice. This morning’s sun glistened off the trees and the freshly fallen (unexpected) snow, and I added […]
